lab days 6 and 7: human senses

Today we have been testing some aspects of the human sense we didn't know. As in class we had been studying this it wasn't something weren't familiar to.

Vision
Firstly, we observed that in the dark we can see the details of any object looking at it from the side. This is because of the role of the rods and cones (photoreceptive neurons). Rods are the receptors for light when it is dark and they are more abundant in the sides of the eye. We also observed that we cannot distinguish colors in the dark because rods don't identify them.

Later, we checked we weren't color blind with this test.

We also looked at several optical illusions.
Here it looks like the spots are moving but they aren´t

The lines look like they are diagonal but are parallel to each other
If you look closely for a while it looks like its moving

Smell and taste
To prove that these two senses are very closely connected and dependent of each other, we tried different juices with our noses covered and had to distinguish them. Most people couldn't tell which juice was which!

Touch
To test how much space there is more or less from on enerve to the other, we got a paper clip and opened it. With the two ends a partner had to touch us with both and we had to tell if they were touching us with one or two sides. They opened them as much as we needed to detect both ends. That was the distance between our nerves. to was astonishing how far apart they were.

Temperature perception
There were two bowls o water, one of them with cold and the other hot. We put a hand in each bowl and noticed the difference very quickly!!!

Orientation and orientation
When you spin quickly you start loosing balance, this is because a liquid inside our ears that is in charge of equilibrium is being moved around. This is why we feel dizzy after spinning around.

Proprioreception
This means that even with our eyes closed we know where each part of our body is and if it's moving or not. We didn't have time to test this using any experiment.
